ComMITMENT to diversity
At LAC+USC Medical Center, we are privileged to work with a diverse, urban underserved patient population. We believe that our workforce should look like the people that we serve. Our residency program has active efforts to recruit and support people from diverse backgrounds.
An avenue to achieve our goal of a more diverse and representative workforce is to create a pipeline program that recruits local talent. This is a multi-pronged effort and will require many champions. In support of that effort, we hosted local middle school and high school students for grand rounds styled presentations were they were the master clinician discussants. Below is an abbreviated video of one of the presentations. Have ideas on how to contribute? Join us.
LAC+USC Affinity Groups are safe spaces to foster support and encouragement among residents and fellows who identify with a particular community during their training at LAC+USC. There are groups for the Black community, Latinx community, LGBTQ+ community, Women in Medicine, First Generation community, a General Diversity & Inclusion group (i.e. for all residents supporting diversity and allies for any affinity subgroups), and more. Depending on the group, these may meet anytime from monthly to quarterly.
Less than 3 Pages Club is a once monthly meeting in which faculty and residents gather to educate each other about social advocacy and justice in health care. Meetings this year have included discussions about SNMA/LMSA outreach and excerpts from Medical Apartheid by Harriet A Washington and Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates.
